Day 1: Industrial Innovation and Riverfront Engineering
Rivers of Steel – Carrie Furnace Tour & Lunch at The Pump House | Morning & Afternoon
Start the trip with a historical and engineering-focused experience at the Carrie Blast Furnaces, a National Historic Landmark. This guided tour from Rivers of Steel explores Pittsburgh’s industrial past, showcasing the science of metallurgy, the engineering behind steel production, and the impact of industrialization on the region. Students will learn about the physics and chemistry involved in iron smelting, the mechanics of large-scale factory operations, and how automation transformed the steel industry.
Following the tour, students will enjoy a boxed lunch at The Pump House, a historic site that played a key role in the 1892 Homestead Steel Strike. Discussions will cover workers’ rights, economic shifts, and technological advancements in manufacturing.
Gateway Clipper Sightseeing Tour | Evening
In the evening, students will embark on a Gateway Clipper Sightseeing Tour, offering a unique perspective on Pittsburgh’s bridges, rivers, and architectural engineering. This guided cruise highlights:
- The science of river navigation and lock systems.
- The structural engineering of Pittsburgh’s historic bridges.
- Environmental conservation efforts along the three rivers.
Day 2: Arts, History, & Cultural Innovation
Pittsburgh Cultural District Matinee | Morning
Students will experience the performing arts with a professional matinee show in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. This interactive experience provides insight into:
- Theatrical production & set design, focusing on engineering behind stage mechanics, lighting, and special effects.
- Acoustics and sound engineering in live performances.
- The role of art and storytelling in cultural history and innovation.
Heinz History Center | Afternoon
Conclude the trip at the Senator John Heinz History Center, Pennsylvania’s largest history museum. This Smithsonian-affiliated institution provides hands-on experiences related to:
- Pittsburgh’s role in innovation and technology, from industrial advancements to modern robotics.
- The Science & Industry Exhibit, exploring engineering breakthroughs that shaped the city.
